Kasumi

Biography
Kasumi was born in feudal Japan and is affiliated with the Takeda clan. Her mother, Asuka, was a kunoichi trained by Mochizuki Chiyome, while her sister, Akari, also became a vampire of the line of Caine.
Kasumi received Koga ninja training and became highly proficient with the sword. She was eventually transformed into a vampire descended from Caine.
Shortly after being turned, Kasumi was attacked by a group of hunters. Dius’ parents saved her life, creating a debt she continued to honor long after joining the Vampire Council.
Kasumi eventually entered Zayne’s service and became one of his trusted operatives. She carried messages, gathered supernatural forces, and fought beside him during the growing conflict involving Athalon, Tef’Lon, Zummabbi, Samyaza, and Typhon.
When Zayne ordered her to dispose of Dius, Kasumi chose honor over obedience. She released him instead of throwing him into the fiery lake and attempted to conceal the truth from Zayne.
Her decision bound her future to Dius. After he later saved her from Zummabbi’s forces, the two escaped into the Marsh and considered leaving Purgatos for Japan while Kasumi recovered.
Kasumi and Dius eventually returned to Zurrkalla and found its gates destroyed, its ground cratered, and its streets covered in the ashes left by Zayne’s weapons. Their discovery placed them near the aftermath of the conflict between Zayne and Zummabbi, with Kasumi’s divided loyalties still unresolved.

Known Family
Asuka, mother

Physical Appearance
Kasumi is a naturally beautiful Japanese woman with long, jet-black hair and deep emerald eyes.
Her hair is long enough to fall over her shoulder when released from beneath her hood. The fiery light of Purgatos reflects vividly in her eyes, accentuating their emerald color.
Kasumi’s beauty survived her transformation into a vampire. Avianna envies her because, unlike an Empusa who must construct an attractive facade, Kasumi remains beautiful despite being a cursed creature of the night.
She commonly wears a hooded outfit and carries a curved sword. Her graceful appearance conceals a highly trained and exceptionally violent close-range combatant.
Identity
Kasumi is a Japanese vampire of the line of Caine, a trained Koga ninja, and an operative serving Zayne and the Vampire Council.
She was born during the feudal period of Japan. Her mother, Asuka, was a kunoichi trained by Mochizuki Chiyome. Kasumi inherited the martial traditions associated with her mother and became highly proficient in swordsmanship, stealth, rapid movement, and close-quarters combat.
Kasumi was transformed into a vampire sometime after her mortal upbringing. Shortly after she was turned, a group of hunters nearly killed her. Dius’ parents intervened and saved her life, creating a debt of honor that Kasumi continued to recognize long after joining the Council.
Although she serves Zayne and ordinarily addresses him as “Master,” Kasumi is not blindly obedient. Her loyalty is governed by personal honor, remembered debts, and her own judgment.

The Vampire Council
Kasumi serves as an operative under Zayne, the head of the Vampire Council. She resides or operates from Hades’ abandoned palace in Purgatos and assists Zayne with matters involving vampires, Malfiens, escaped prisoners, and threats affecting the underworld.
Zayne trusts Kasumi enough to send her as his personal representative. When the release of Tef’Lon creates a potential crisis, Zayne orders her to travel to Zurrkalla, request an audience with Zummabbi, and summon his army to the palace.
Kasumi completes the assignment despite her intense dislike of Zummabbi and her distrust of the Malfiens living under his authority.
Her position within the Council becomes endangered after she refuses to execute Dius. Kasumi understands that Zayne’s discovery of her disobedience could result in her death, but she considers murdering Dius a greater betrayal of the family that once saved her.
Personality
Kasumi is proud, sarcastic, confrontational, perceptive, loyal, and strongly governed by personal honor.
She openly challenges people she considers incompetent and rarely conceals her dislike of someone. Her speech is direct, insulting, and frequently profane. She is particularly hostile toward Avianna and Zummabbi.
Kasumi can be cruel when provoking someone she dislikes. She deliberately emphasizes Avianna’s loneliness because she knows it is one of the Empusa’s deepest insecurities. She criticizes Ava’s failure to capture Athalon and questions how an experienced Malfien huntress could be defeated by a mortal man.
Despite her abrasive personality, Kasumi is capable of compassion, gratitude, and self-sacrifice. She refuses to kill Dius because his parents saved her when she was newly turned. She accepts the possibility of punishment from Zayne rather than repay that kindness by murdering their son.
Kasumi also evaluates people according to their actions rather than permanently accepting the labels placed upon them. After Athalon fights beside Zayne’s forces during Zummabbi’s attack, she questions whether he was ever truly their enemy.
Although fiercely independent, Kasumi is emotionally affected by sincere loyalty. Dius’ promise to protect her causes her to blush, and learning that he considers her a friend warms what she describes as her cold, undead heart.

Vampiric Abilities
As a vampire of the line of Caine, Kasumi possesses the intrinsic abilities of a Night-Walker.
Her known vampiric abilities include:
Supernatural speed
Enhanced strength
Enhanced reflexes
Enhanced agility
Heightened senses
Accelerated healing
Increased durability
Extended longevity
Teleportation (Galdir)
Rapid materialization
Ability to see in darkness
Ability to survive severe physical trauma
Recovery through consuming blood
Freedom from the biological need for sleep
Kasumi refers to vampirism as a curse inherited through the bloodline of Caine. Because Caine murdered his brother and was cursed, those descended from his line share aspects of that punishment.
Kasumi does not sleep and is restricted to what she jokingly calls a “liquid diet.” Blood sustains her body and accelerates her recovery from injuries.
Supernatural Speed
Kasumi can move faster than ordinary human or Malfien perception.
When one of Zummabbi’s Malfiens attempts to seize her by the throat, Kasumi severs his hand before he or the surrounding witnesses can see her move. The only visible indication of her attack is a brief glint from her blade.
She later circles the same Malfien using the intrinsic speed of a Night-Walker and systematically removes his limbs and portions of his body. When two additional Malfiens intervene, Kasumi decapitates both so quickly that their deaths are not immediately apparent.
Her speed allows her to combine swordsmanship with sudden changes in position, making it extremely difficult for an opponent to anticipate the direction of her next attack.
Accelerated Healing
Kasumi can recover from injuries that would permanently disable or kill an ordinary human.
Her recovery is directly affected by feeding. After several Malfiens dislocate both of her shoulders, the injuries remain painful and recover more slowly because she has not consumed blood.
Kasumi explains that she will heal more quickly once she feeds. Her healing is therefore powerful but not instantaneous or independent of nourishment.
Koga Ninja Training
Kasumi received Koga ninja training rooted in the martial traditions of feudal Japan.
Her training includes:
Swordsmanship
Stealth
Rapid movement
Defensive positioning
Close-quarters combat
Precision strikes
Fighting multiple opponents
Targeting limbs and vulnerable areas
Maintaining awareness while surrounded
Concealing her intentions
Combining supernatural speed with martial technique
Kasumi’s combat style is controlled and technically precise despite the brutality of its results. She does not merely overpower her opponents. She disables them piece by piece, using exact cuts and rapid repositioning to prevent retaliation.
Kunoichi Heritage
Kasumi’s mother, Asuka, was one of the women taken in and trained by Mochizuki Chiyome.
Mochizuki Chiyome was associated with the training of kunoichi, female operatives skilled in infiltration, disguise, intelligence gathering, manipulation, and assassination.
Kasumi identifies her mother’s training when Dius asks where she came from and how she learned to use a sword. Her answer connects her combat ability directly to her maternal heritage.
Kasumi is also affiliated with the Takeda clan, further connecting her history to the warfare and political conflicts of feudal Japan.
Swordsmanship
Kasumi is an exceptionally skilled swordswoman who fights with a curved blade.
Her known techniques include:
Drawing and striking before an opponent can perceive movement
Defensive sword positioning
Low fighting stances
Limb removal
Decapitation
Repeated precision cuts
Fighting while surrounded
Reversing the orientation of her blade
Rapidly sheathing her weapon after an attack
Using vampiric speed to circle an opponent
Engaging creatures considerably larger than herself
Before battle, Kasumi lowers her stance and turns the pointed end of her sword behind her. This posture allows her to prepare for an attack while limiting the opponent’s ability to determine the intended angle of her strike.
Kasumi habitually flicks the blood from her blade before returning it to its sheath.
Combat Ability
Kasumi combines supernatural speed, vampiric strength, Koga training, and swordsmanship into an extremely lethal close-range fighting style.
She is capable of fighting multiple Malfiens simultaneously and leaving several bodies at her feet. During Zummabbi’s attack, she holds her position against a large number of enemy combatants before eventually being overwhelmed.
Kasumi’s smaller frame does not prevent her from inflicting catastrophic injuries upon larger opponents. She compensates for differences in size and physical power through speed, movement, precision, and the systematic destruction of limbs.
She is nevertheless vulnerable when multiple powerful enemies manage to restrain her simultaneously. During battle, two Malfiens seize her wrists and pull her arms in opposite directions while a third repeatedly strikes her. The attack dislocates both shoulders and leaves her unable to defend herself effectively.
Dius intervenes, kills the Malfiens attacking her, resets her shoulders, and carries her away from the battlefield.
Primary Weapon
Curved Sword
Kasumi’s primary weapon is a curved Japanese sword.
She uses the weapon for:
Slashing
Decapitation
Dismemberment
Defensive positioning
Precision strikes
Rapid counterattacks
Fighting multiple enemies
Exploiting supernatural speed
Threatening opponents without immediately attacking
Kasumi’s swordsmanship is swift enough that nearby witnesses may not recognize an attack until severed limbs or heads strike the ground.
Relationship with Zayne
Kasumi serves Zayne as a trusted Council operative and ordinarily addresses him as “Master.”
She follows his commands, represents him before other factions, and assists him during supernatural conflicts. She is comfortable enough in his presence to lounge carelessly across his throne, though she immediately becomes respectful when his tone or expression warns that she has gone too far.
Zayne trusts Kasumi enough to send her into Zurrkalla as his representative. That trust becomes compromised when he discovers that she disobeyed his order to dispose of Dius.
Kasumi fears Zayne’s reaction because she understands both his authority and his capacity for violence. Despite that fear, she refuses to apologize for sparing Dius. His parents saved her life when she was newly turned, and she cannot accept repaying them by murdering their son.
After the battle, Kasumi believes returning to Zayne may result in her death. Dius nevertheless warns her that she cannot avoid confronting him forever.
Relationship with Dius
Kasumi shares a deep bond with Dius rooted in gratitude, honor, friendship, and developing affection.
Dius’ parents saved Kasumi from a group of hunters shortly after she became a vampire. When Zayne later commands Kasumi to dispose of their son in the fiery lake, she searches for a loophole in the wording of the order.
Kasumi brings Dius to the lake as commanded but explains that disposing of him does not necessarily require destroying him. She removes his restraining collar and formally releases him:
“I release you, Dius, son of Valir. You are free.”
Kasumi warns him to leave and never return so Zayne will not discover her disobedience. Dius recognizes that she has risked her life to spare him and declares himself eternally indebted to her.
Kasumi later travels to Zurrkalla specifically to check on Dius and warn him about Zummabbi. She believes Zummabbi is dangerous, obsessed with power and respect, and likely to kill Dius if he appears cowardly or disloyal.
During battle, Dius kills members of his own forces to save Kasumi. He carries her into the Marsh, resets her dislocated shoulders, and promises to protect her for as long as he lives.
His declaration causes Kasumi to blush and produces an unfamiliar emotional reaction within her. She is similarly moved when he refers to her as a friend.
Their relationship develops into a partnership. Kasumi invites Dius to accompany her to Japan while she recovers and helps him consider taking a human vessel so he can exist there without drawing attention.
Relationship with Avianna
Kasumi and Avianna share an openly hostile and competitive relationship.
Avianna envies Kasumi’s natural beauty. Even after becoming a vampire, Kasumi remains physically attractive without requiring shapeshifting, seduction, or a constructed facade. Ava secretly resents this because she believes her own natural form is hideous.
Kasumi is aware of Avianna’s loneliness and deliberately uses it against her. When Ava returns without Athalon, Kasumi emphasizes that she has returned “alone” and mocks her inability to bring a man back with her.
Their conflict includes:
Personal insults
Competition for Zayne’s approval
Criticism of one another’s failures
Jealousy
Sarcasm
Deliberate emotional provocation
Refusal to acknowledge assistance
Avianna accuses Kasumi of hypocrisy after Zayne discovers that she spared Dius. Kasumi had criticized Ava for failing to capture Athalon, while Kasumi herself had deliberately disobeyed a direct command.
Despite their hostility, Ava saves Kasumi during battle. Kasumi refuses to express gratitude and insists that she had the situation under control.
Relationship with Zummabbi
Kasumi despises and distrusts Zummabbi.
She describes him as creepy and claims that merely looking at him makes her skin crawl. When Zayne sends her to request Zummabbi’s assistance, she reluctantly obeys but remains guarded around him and his followers.
Zummabbi refers to Kasumi as “green-eyes” and quickly recognizes her divided loyalties. He knows that she spared Dius and uses that knowledge to question whether her allegiance truly belongs to Zayne.
Kasumi openly calls Zummabbi a creepy, half-blooded freak and tells him she does not trust him. When his followers surround her and attempt to prevent her from leaving, she draws her sword and kills or dismembers several of them.
Zummabbi is amused rather than angered by her resistance. He warns Kasumi that conflict is coming and that she must decide where her loyalties lie before she is caught on the wrong side.
Kasumi takes the threat seriously. Zummabbi’s tone is disturbing enough to send a chill through her despite her being a creature of the night.
Relationship with Athalon
Kasumi initially regards Athalon as an escaped prisoner and possible threat.
She criticizes Avianna for failing to capture him and questions how a mortal man could defeat experienced supernatural hunters. She also understands that his escape and alliance with Tef’Lon could create a serious danger for the Council.
Kasumi’s view changes after Athalon fights beside Zayne’s forces during Zummabbi’s attack.
She recognizes that Athalon:
Could have attacked them but chose not to
Fought against Zummabbi’s forces
Was originally wanted for questioning
May not have been responsible for the threat involving Typhon
Could potentially have become an ally
When Dius claims Athalon was their enemy, Kasumi challenges him to identify anything Athalon had done to them beyond their existing assumptions and Dius’ personal grudge.
She ultimately believes Athalon might have been useful if the larger conflict worsened.
Vulnerabilities
Kasumi’s known vulnerabilities include:
Severe blood deprivation
Slowed healing when she has not fed
Physical restraint by multiple powerful opponents
Joint dislocation
Overwhelming numbers
Zayne’s authority
Exposure of her disobedience
Her loyalty to Dius
Personal debts that conflict with her assigned duties
Divided allegiance during supernatural conflicts
Kasumi’s strongest moral qualities can also place her in danger. Her refusal to betray those she owes makes her predictable to someone who understands her code of honor.
Zummabbi recognizes this vulnerability and uses Dius to pressure Kasumi into questioning her allegiance to Zayne.
